I just read this article in Mindshift and it reminds me of the book I read and loved “The end of average; how we succeed in a world that values sameness”.
This is the quote that I liked and particularly when they say that smart isn’t being right fast. That would be one quality I would like to see in school. It reminds of the work that needs to be done to change the mindset of the teachers regarding the testing and grading. Every year we have a great argument about the times for testing. I wrote an article about grading and formative assessment, what is the difference here. As long as most teachers think summative assessment and not formative assessment, we will have students skipping tests and cheating on the test. And I am in no way supporting those who choose the latter. I am just trying to ask the questions, how can we improve the learning with guidance instead. Marzano details the specific benefits of formative assessment—assessment that is used during instruction rather than at the end of a course or unit in his book “Formative Assessment & Standard based grading”
Every teacher in the Academy of Health and Medicine has read Carol Dweck’s book, “Mindset,” and has discussed how to implement it in their classrooms. The school has moved to standards-based grading to emphasize that mistakes are part of learning and that understanding will come.
“It just reinforces the fact that understanding the first time you hear something isn’t the goal,” Clark said. “Smart isn’t being right fast. It’s working through things and understanding things eventually.”. Read the whole article here.
