Lesson Plan: Guess the 10 Most Dangerous Animals in the World

Top 10 most dangerous animals in the world

Which animal kills the most humans per year? If you guessed sharks, you’d be wrong.

While plenty of animals have developed a reputation for being intimidating, only one can reign supreme as the most dangerous. To be more specific, this animal kills the most humans.

Hollywood films would have you believe that it’s the toughest animals like lions and crocodiles that we need to watch out for. However, many animals are much less lethal than you’d expect – sharks, for instance, only kill 70 humans each year. BBC Science

1. Warm-up: “Who do you think is the deadliest?”

Start with this question on the board:

Which animals do you think are the most dangerous to humans?

Tell students they must guess the top 10 before seeing the real list. Encourage wild guesses. Many students will say sharks, tigers, bears, or wolves, which makes the reveal more fun.

You can say:

“Today’s list is not about the biggest animal or the scariest-looking animal. It’s about which animals cause the most human deaths.”

2. Quick guess challenge

Have students work alone or in pairs and write their own Top 10 Most Dangerous Animals list.

Add one extra rule for fun:

  • They must rank them from 10 to 1
  • They only get one minute to decide their top three

After that, ask a few pairs to share their guesses. Write repeated answers on the board.

3. Class poll

Ask:

  • Which animal do you think is number 1?
  • Which animal do you think should definitely be in the top 10?
  • Which animal do you think people wrongly assume is very deadly?

4. Reveal the real list
