Lesson Plan
Subject: Social Studies
Grade Level: 10-12
Topic: Joe Biden’s Reelection Campaign
Objectives:
- Students will be able to identify the key issues that are likely to be debated in the 2024 presidential election.
- Students will be able to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Joe Biden’s candidacy.
- Students will be able to formulate their own opinion on whether or not Joe Biden should be reelected.
Materials:
- Whiteboard or projector
- Markers or pens
- Handouts of articles and/or videos about Joe Biden’s reelection campaign
- Handouts of a voter registration form
Procedure:
- Begin by reviewing the key issues that are likely to be debated in the 2024 presidential election. These issues could include the economy, healthcare, education, climate change, and foreign policy.
- Next, distribute handouts of articles and/or videos about Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. Have students read or watch the materials and then come up with a list of Biden’s strengths and weaknesses as a candidate.
- Once students have had a chance to review the materials, lead a class discussion about Biden’s candidacy. Encourage students to share their opinions on whether or not they think Biden should be reelected.
- How do candidates for the presidency fund their campaigns? Look at the Tweet Joe Biden sent right after his announcement.
- To conclude the lesson, if in the US, distribute handouts of a voter registration form. Encourage students to register to vote and to make their voices heard in the 2024 presidential election.
Assessment:
- Students will be assessed on their ability to identify the key issues that are likely to be debated in the 2024 presidential election.
- Students will be assessed on their ability to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Joe Biden’s candidacy.
- Students will be assessed on their ability to formulate their own opinion on whether or not Joe Biden should be reelected.
Differentiation:
- For students who need more support, provide them with a graphic organizer to help them track the key points of the lesson.
- For students who are ready for a challenge, have them research a particular issue that is likely to be debated in the 2024 presidential election and write a short essay about their findings.
Extension:
- Have students create a campaign poster or website for Joe Biden or his opponent.
- Have students participate in a mock presidential debate.
- Have students write to their elected officials and express their views on the issues that are important to them.
