Lesson plan; Understanding the Significance of Donald Trump’s Fraud Conviction

Trump found guilty and is first ex-president convicted of a crime

Overview

In this lesson, students will explore the context and implications of Donald Trump’s fraud conviction, analyze legal and political ramifications, and discuss the themes of accountability and the rule of law in a democratic society.

Donald Trump has been convicted of fraud by a New York jury that declared he was guilty of all 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a payment made to a porn star during his tumultuous 2016 campaign for the White House.

The verdict made him the first former president in American history to be convicted in a criminal court. It came in the midst of a presidential campaign, sometimes conducted in a gloomy courthouse corridor, in which Trump, 77, could be returned to the White House months after a judge has decided whether or not to send him to jail. How about humor, can it make a person change their minds?

Jimmy Kimmel took aim at Donald Trump and the end of his hush-money trial on last night’s edition of his late-night show.

  • What role can comedy play in addressing serious political/legal issues? Can it effectively critique power or is it limited?
  • When is humor helpful versus harmful in discussing complex issues? How can it provide insight or obscure important nuances?
  • Are there ethical boundaries comedians should observe when joking about court cases, elected officials, etc.?
  1. Allow an open discussion exploring different perspectives on this topic. Students should back up their views with specific examples/reasoning.
