I know some of our visitors to Norway have been looking for this video, so I’m proud to share it here
Jury Award recipient in the category of “Through My Eyes” for the 2018 FILM YOUR ISSUE: Youth Speak Out, Leadership Listens.
17-year-old Norwegian students send a message to American leaders on gun violence. The class of students at Sandvika High School near Oslo, Norway, said they made this video to “support the brave teenagers in Stoneman Douglas High School after the tragic school shooting, and to send a message to American leaders.”
“The video was created by my whole class, and recorded and written in the school’s classrooms,” says Daniel Sandssalen, the film’s producer and editor. “The editing happened in my home and in the English classes at school. I’ve grown up in Norway – a country that tops the list of the happiest country in the world and has close to 0 gun deaths. After the Stoneman Douglas high school massacre, I decided I wanted to support the students fighting for gun control. My teacher gathered the entire class and everyone agreed to participate.”
“In the film, we discuss gun laws, fear and international gun laws. We discussed both the state of affairs in the United States and Norway. No country should ever suffer through such tragic loss, and therefore we wanted to show our support and hopefully impact the policies currently affecting gun use in the U.S.”
HeathCliff’s take: We got a number of submissions about gun control issues from youth, and we felt that this particular direct message from youth in Oslo speaking out to American leaders was a powerful perspective.
