Book written by students and teacher

My name is Ann S. Michaelsen, and I’m a school leader and teacher at Sandvika high school.   The last 3 years I had a 20 % position at the University of Oslo  Read about it here.  My resume is found here.

My latest book is “The digital classroom, transforming the way we learn”.

This practical book introduces easy-to-use methods to all teachers in digital classrooms with the intention to make it simple, accessible, and achievable for everyone. It is not only about the tools, and the how and why, but also about changing the pedagogy making the learning more relevant to the students. When you open the classroom to the rest of the world, the teacher becomes more important than ever. Topics in the book include:

Digital tools can play a key role in making learning happen and what the teachers know about the use of technology is key. The Digital Classroom will be of great interest to teachers and trainee teachers who wish to develop their digital competency by using the book as part of their professional learning.

Sandvika is a high school with 850 students in the age group 16 to 19. The school is situated close to Oslo the capital of  Norway.  I was a member of the 2013 Horizon Norway Advisory Board, 2014 Scandinavian Horizon board, and 2014 Horizon Report Europe Advisory Board. In 2012 I wrote the book “Connected Learners: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Global Classroom” with 27 high school students. I spoke at Bett in London in 2014 and was recognized by BBC News Technology and BBC Click. The result was an article on BBC News and a team of reporters from BBC Click and BBC school report visited our school, this was aired on BBC World. I was portrayed in the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera in 2014, and worked at the Norwegian exam board making exams suited for the use of the internet during exams in the three English courses offered for High School seniors in Norway. I have written a book for teachers in Norway published by Cappelen Damm in 2015. Second edition in 2019 and the third in 2023.  I have translated my book “the digital classroom” to English and the book was published by Routledge  January 2021. 1. We have an ongoing discussion about the ethics of usuing computers at school, here at the Media and kommunuication department. We (Mk teachers) should be forunners for teaching in this area. It seems to me that the challenges we have to face in the classroom could be solved for many if we organize a forum for good solutions and information which can guide all teachers. As a new teacher at Sandvika VGS I have already experienced many (time consuming) discussions of what to do with the lap-tops during classes. (They are tools for learning and communication – not to accepted as the pupil´s instument of recluse). Regards Paul J. Mck

  2. I couldn’t access your email address through your post, so I left you a message on Sue’s blog. I thought I would drop a note here also. We would love to collaborate with your class. I know time will be a difficulty, but maybe we could work through student blogs or wiki.

    Thanks,
    Lisa

  3. Hello Ann!
I found your site linked to Lisa’s Tidertechie site (we are both participating in the 31 Day Blogging Challenge). I wanted to leave a comment because I think it’s wonderful how you are using blogging with your students! I am about to set up a classroom blog for my art/photography students and it is helpful for me to look at other examples.

I also wanted to mention that my husband is Norwegian (he was born here in Canada, but his parents are from Steinkjer) and we have always wanted to travel in your beautiful country. Looking at the photos on the student blogs makes me want to travel there even more!

  4. Hi Ann!

I also came across your blog through the Tidertechie site. So unusual to find another Scandinavian teacher who is into the use of ICT in language classes. I am a high school English and French teacher in Finland, and have been testing several new tools to connect my students internationally.

Your blog is amazing, and I am definitely going to keep reading. Maybe next year we could get our students together for some activity – Skype or something?

Thank you for sharing wonderful lesson plans with the whole world!

  5. I think you have missed one of the most fun sites for learning English online verbbusters
It’s all about the irregular verbs & it ha sfree activities, search engine and lots of other resources.

  6. I’m new to blogging and am trying it with community college students. We are just getting started. I’d love to get some feedback as they start to post their work.

Also, the format of my blog – would you have any suggestions to make?

    thanks!!

  7. Thanks Anne for sharing your blog and work, I’m sure many of my students at the university would be interested in exchanges. We don’t officially start the academic year for a few more weeks so I’ll set something up and then get back to you. Would your students like that, do you think?
Looking forward to finding out more!

  8. Hey Ann!
I was just going to let you know this years students have their blogs up and are starting a 3 Day Challenge this week. I am having them visit your student’s blogs as models! So, if you see some sporatic comments on student blogs, those our my students for this year.
We moved off the block and onto seven period days, so there hasn’t been much time to blog.

  9. Hi/Hei 🙂

I am also a Norwegian English teacher and I use a lot of web 2 tools as well as Moodle in my teaching. However, I teach in Izmir, Turkey (at an American school) and my students are 8th graders. I am very happy to have found your blog! It is interesting to follow the goings-on in the home-country 🙂 I taught for several years at Flekkefjord Vdg Skole in Flekkefjord before I moved to Turkey but in those days (it’s been a while) we didn’t even know what computer assisted learning was 😀

    beste hilsen, Karin

    1. Hi Karin, thank you for your nice comment! Fun to hear from teachers around the world and fun to hear you are from Norway. Good luck teaching in Turkey. Glad you have found something useful here!

  10. I am definitely not too accustomed to this subject matter but I do like to have a look at blogs for layout suggestions and fascinating topics. You genuinely described a that I typically do not care considerably about and developed it very fascinating. This is a nice blog that I’ll be aware of. 11. Hi Ann,

Starting from Google’s keyword “web 2.0 tools for english teachers”, it appears that your website comes the first. After a glance, I found that this is what the “ideal school” called. I just want to drop a line for greetings and keep up your great job!

  12. Thanks for finding the time to go over this, I truly feel strongly regarding this and love learning extra for this topic. If doable, while you achieve expertise, would you mind updating your weblog with further info? It is extremely of great help for me.

  13. Hi Ann,

I work for an education technology start-up in London, and our team regularly visit your blog for thought-leadership. I found your blog post ’25 web 2.0 tools for teachers’ particularly interesting and informative – some great resources mentioned there and we have one we think you’d be interested in.

Not sure if you’ve heard about us (Wordia.com), but I’d value any thoughts you have on what we’re trying to do (we’re trying to map the K-12 – all of the vocabulary that students need to learn… raising literacy and subject vocab levels, through video and games-based learning).

Originally, Wordia was built as a ‘living video dictionary’, but under the advisement of 100s of educators – we’ve pivoted to something that I’m really excited to be sharing with you!

The new-look Wordia has just launched – with some smart technology that lets educators build their own word games and hold school tournaments! We’d love you to have a look, and tell us what you think. Indeed – we’re running a t-shirt competition – and I’d love to send a school you know, some free Wordia t-shirts (a thank you – for helping us with the R&D efforts!).

It’s early days, but your feedback would be most welcome!

    Thanks again.

    1. Hi Rob, I had a look at your web-site and it looks great! It looks like it is targeted at students aged 7 to 14. Since I’m at a high school it is difficult to try it with my students. But I’ll think about recommending it to a middle school and see what they think!

  14. I precisely desired to thank you very much yet again. I’m not certain the things that I would have used in the absence of the actual ideas provided by you concerning my situation. It was an absolute fearsome matter in my opinion, but taking a look at your expert style you resolved that made me to leap for fulfillment. I’m grateful for this assistance and believe you realize what an amazing job you’re providing teaching many people using a site. Most likely you haven’t got to know all of us.

  18. Hello,
I have recently begun to follow your blog. I teach History near Boston, MA in the United States. The school is an independent school which has begun to focus on design thinking and making the class a dynamic and authentic experience. As such, I have begun to seek out connections with other schools around the world (including South Korea, Egypt, and Afghanistan) to build relationship among history students via Skype. I would love to see if you might be interested in working with my class at some point over the coming year to discuss current events, crises, politics, and/or the international economy.

  30. Hi Ann…Can you please let me know what online co-pubishing and co-editing platform you and your student co-authors used to jointly edit the Collaborative Learners text. I am trying to write a collaborative book online with co-editors and authors where we can all have access to viewing the various chapters as they write- to avoid redundancy. I am finding it really difficult to find a user-friendly and motivating platform through which a real living-authors-community can co-write asynchronously. Thanks

    1. Hi Eddy

We used OneNote and Skydrive to collaborate to start with. That way everyone could see what the others were writing at all times. If you buy our book we explain the process there! I made a pdf file that we published at the PLP press. And I made a word document for the Amazon self publishing.

  31. Hi Ann,
I am trying to find classes to collaborate with for a quadblogging or similar program for my students. I teach about 100 9th grade (14-15 year old) World Affairs students in a diverse, urban high school outside of Chicago, IL USA. We missed the current quadblogging groups but would love to join one. Please contact me if you are interested now or in the future. Thank you!

If you are interested in doing a review please email me back with your mailing address and color choice (red, green, blue, black or pink). You can check the sharpeners out at http://www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com.

The expectation is that you post your review with photos and a link to my online store, which is http://www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com. Videos would be amazing too if that is possible. Once the review is posted please email me back with the url so that I can share it with my 14,000 Facebook fans (most of them are teachers!). This way you will hopefully see some new traffic to your site. I hope to hear back from you soon so that I can ship you a sharpener to test out.

    Kindest regards,
    Troy Decoff

  51. Hello Ann,

In partnership with the University of Melbourne, we recently launched a new professional development program for teachers called Visible Classroom.

We’re very excited about the potential of this program to assist teachers to increase their impact in the classroom. As the author of one of the leading education blogs, we thought you might be interested in watching our short animation explaining the program.

  53. Dear Ann,

My name is Peter Pollis and I am participating in a master’s of education program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. The program is allowing me, someone with many years of experience working abroad with my government and the United Nations, to obtain secondary teaching certification in the state of Michigan. My endorsement areas (focus areas) are the social studies’ thematic areas of history, world history, government, civics, world geography, and economics.

I am learning a lot about how the public education system effectively works, and does not work, in the United States, and it is actually the individual states that manage their respective public education systems, which includes traditional public schools (around 90 percent) and charter schools (around 10 percent).

As I get closer to my future employment of secondary education teacher, I face some challenges in how I plan to manage my classroom and how I deliver lessons to students in a dynamic manner to maximize learning for students of all abilities.

Among the many papers I have read as part of my university’s master’s program was “Reading linear texts on paper versus computer screen: Effects on reading comprehension” (Mangen, et al., 2013). And as I have been studying the effectiveness of using various educational tools in the classroom, I wonder if you have discussed in any of your blog postings a discussion on the issue of printed texts and materials provided to students versus those who access these same texts and materials via computer screen. The larger question here is whether schools should continue to retain some aspects of the traditional classroom as education technology “ed tech” tools are increasingly introduced into classrooms.

I fully support 1:1 in schools as it is vital that all students have access to computers and wireless technologies to facilitate their learning on many levels. But I am also acutely aware that there are pros and cons increasingly adding ed tech tools to the classroom in a thoughtful manner. As everyone now knows, ed tech tools and platforms played (and continue to play) an important part of education delivery during this Covid-19 period.

However, I believe that there is still a role in classrooms for printed text and materials, especially for reading comprehension and for digging deeper into primary and secondary written and non-written primary and secondary sources to facilitate the building of historical thinking skills among students.

But I wonder what your views are on the issues I raised regarding how much technology should teachers consider in their classroom versus traditional sources and methods.

Secondly, I continue to hear about the significant advantages educators and school systems in Scandinavia have over the United States and other countries in terms of strong performance based on common-sense practices and holistic teaching environments that strives for equity over excellence. I can understand the advantages some countries might have with respect to having more homogenous (less diverse) populations, but I believe that educators in Scandinavia would push back on this notion that Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are only successful in education because they are mostly alike ethnically, racially, culturally and socially in their respective countries.

Therefore, I kindly ask if you might have discussed this topic in one of your blogs, or if you have written any papers on this topic, or can direct me to literature that has effectively and adequately discussed this issues, and related issues.

I have been enjoying your blog now for several months and I look forward to any information you might be able and willing to share with me in regards to the two topics/issues I raised herein.

    Very sincere regards,

    Peter Pollis, Master’s Candidate
