Lesson plan: Democracy Under Pressure

This lesson plan uses the NYT video “Day of Rage: How Trump Supporters Took the U.S. Capitol” together with the Aftenposten opinion piece “Sivilisasjonen har allerede kollapset” to explore political violence, democratic fragility and the idea of “civilizational collapse”.

The Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was perhaps the most widely documented act of political violence in history. The New York Times obtained, analyzed and mapped out thousands of cellphone videos, police bodycam recordings and internal police audio to provide the most complete picture to date of what happened — and why. Our Oscar-shortlisted documentary “Day of Rage” charts in chilling detail how the peaceful transition of power was disrupted by rioters who stormed a seemingly impenetrable seat of government.

Answer these questions:

  1. How the film tells the story
How does Day of Rage use video clips, the timeline, mapping, and narration to shape what viewers think happened on January 6? Use at least two specific moments from the film and explain how the film’s choices affect your understanding of democracy and why the event mattered.

  2. What should we call it—and why?
Many people use different labels for January 6 (protest, riot, insurrection). Which label do you think fits best, and why? Choose clear reasons (for example: goals, targets, level of planning, or attempts to stop a democratic process) and support your answer with evidence from the film.

  3. Who is responsible?
According to the film, who is responsible for what happened on January 6? Explain how the film shows responsibility (individuals, groups, leaders, and/or institutions). Use at least two examples from the film and discuss whether the film is fair or one-sided in how it presents blame.
