I’m on my way to Sydney Australia to participate in the Flat Connection Conference. The theme of the conference is ‘What’s the other story?’, encouraging participants to look at how we can break through stereotypical attitudes and find real stories that will improve cultural understanding and cement relationships for future learning and working opportunities.

Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice — and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. Reminds me of my good friend Moliehi Sekese and all her wonderful stories. Together we are working on finding what’s the other story and helping young people learn and understand.
